Leaving Home

When I was growing up we only had two TV channels, ABC and GTS-BKN, the latter was a mix of all sorts of channels and a bit crap and seemed to have an abundance of ads by the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints and Amy Grant.

Stuff you wouldn’t get on Adelaide telly as we called it.

There was this ad that had a young guy “leaving home, for a hundred million reasons, leaving home, gotta go out on my own...” then in the end he rings his mum. Actually maybe it was an ad for Telecom. The thing is - that ad (along Patsy Biscoe saying good night boys and girls) has stayed in my head.

And every time I come back to mum and dad’s for a holiday and every time I leave again this song is on repeat in my head.

We are heading back to reality today. School is about to start again and I suppose I will have to start wearing real shoes and make up again at some point. All those beach visits and hanging with family have been fabulous, I’m trying to pack our bags and I can’t believe how heavy they are. How many packets of FruChoc’s have I added?!

After saying good bye to my beautiful sister and her family a few days ago it is now time to say good bye to the parents and the cat, hiding tears behind big glasses and blaming it all on the sea air and dust.

Time to leave home for home.

  1. oh I feel your pain Mrs S. Had two weeks off work and spent the time in Brisvegas with my 81 year old widowed dad (the beloved evils 'Papa') and spending time in the place where I grew up. Even tho I am in my mid 40's leaving home - even tho' Melbourne is my home now - is difficult. Goes with your other post about grandparent time as all our family lives 2 hours plane trip away. But I admit I got home, saw a real cafe and went 'phew'...
